Piece moves and special rules

The game you are playing

RoChess! is rated chess. Opening recognition, puzzles, and Game Review only make sense under ordinary chess laws. This page is the movement reference for that game. It is not a second ruleset invented for Roblox.

Both sides start with the usual army. White moves first. A move is legal only when your own king is not left in check.

How each piece moves

Piece Move Capture
Pawn One square forward, or two from its starting square, if the path is empty One square diagonally forward
Knight An L shape: two squares one way and one square perpendicular The piece on the arrival square. Knights jump
Bishop Any distance on one diagonal The first enemy piece on that diagonal
Rook Any distance on a rank or file The first enemy piece on that line
Queen Any distance on a rank, file, or diagonal Same as a rook or bishop
King One square in any direction An adjacent enemy piece, if the square is safe

You cannot pass through your own pieces. Except for the knight, you cannot jump.

Special moves

Castling. If the interface offers it, select the king and then the highlighted square toward the rook. It is legal only when the king and that rook have not moved, the squares between them are empty, the king is not in check, and the king does not cross or land on an attacked square. Kingside and queenside are separate choices.

En passant. If an enemy pawn moves two squares and lands beside your pawn, you may capture it as if it had moved one square. The option exists only on the immediate next move. If you play something else, it is gone.

Promotion. A pawn that reaches the last rank is replaced. Queen is the usual choice. The other pieces are legal too. Choose from the prompt the game shows. Do not assume the pawn stays a pawn.

How games end

Check is an attack on the king. You must answer it by moving the king, capturing the checker, or blocking. Checkmate is check with no legal answer. That is the normal win.

A game can also end by resignation, by an agreed draw, or when a player's clock runs out under the selected time control. Stalemate is a draw: the side to move is not in check and has no legal move. Other standard draw cases include insufficient material, threefold repetition, and the fifty-move rule when the game enforces them. This wiki has not seen a separate RoChess! draw menu that replaces those laws.

Capturing more pieces does not by itself end the game. You still have to mate, or the opponent has to resign or flag.

Using the highlights

Published control notes for the current interface say you tap or click a piece and then a highlighted square. An unhighlighted square does nothing useful. When you are in check, only moves that escape check are offered. Castling, en passant, and promotion use that same select-and-place flow when they are legal.

Practice each special move once against an easy bot before you rely on it in a rated game.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Which clocks can I play?

The public leaderboards are Bullet, Blitz, Rapid, and Puzzles. The experience also says there are 9 time controls. The exact clock for each of those 9 is not printed on the game description, so this wiki does not assign minute values to them.

How do codes work?

The only code printed by the developer community is GROUPCODE, for free Tokens. Join 1 Elo Chess, open RoChess!, use Shop then Codes, and submit the code exactly. Several 18 October 2026 lists also name 1000LIKES, SOYSLOPGAMES, and CORDCODE, but those strings are not on the community description.

What should a new player do first?

Start with an easy bot, learn legal moves and king safety, then use puzzles before you queue a rated game. After the game, open Game Review and the Analysis Board. The developer tells new players to begin with an easy bot and work toward Master.

What is RoChess!?

RoChess! is a free Roblox experience by 1 Elo Chess. It is rated chess against other people, with 9 time controls, Game Review, an Analysis Board, more than 1,300 rated puzzles, 19 Vortex bots from Beginner to Master, and recognition for more than 3,800 openings.

Is RoChess! free?

Yes. The experience is free to join on Roblox. Tokens from codes are a separate reward, and this wiki does not have a published list of what Tokens buy.
